Nick Pope wins League Cup with Newcastle in landmark for English goalkeeper
Last week, Newcastle ended their seventy-year trophy drought as they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup at Wembley. The Magpies took the trophy back north thanks to Dan Burn and Alexander Isak's goals. Nick Pope was between the sticks for Newcastle on the day and made a crucial save, which denied Curtis Jones’ powerful effort that could have turned the tie. Nick Pope’s cup win made him the first English goalkeeper to win a major domestic trophy since 2016 when Joe Hart won the League Cup final (also against Liverpool).
Goalkeeper clashes with ball boy in Irish Premiership game
On Saturday, Carrick Rangers played Cliftonville in an Irish Premiership game. Cliftonville were winning 2-0 after an hour, with Carrick Rangers chasing much needed goals in the remaining half an hour. While Carrick Rangers were 2-0 down, their goalkeeper – Jack McIntrye – had a goal kick.
The ball boy for Cliftonville went to give McIntrye the ball but he pushed the young child to the floor causing outrage in the crowd behind him. McIntrye wasn’t sent off, but the moment was caught on camera and has been doing the rounds on social media.
Alisson suffers injury against Colombia
This week, Brazil played Colombia in a World Cup Qualifier game, with both teams in need of a win if they want to go to America in the summer of 2026. The game was tied at 1-1 with fifteen minutes to go before Alisson came off with an injury to his head. Minutes prior, he had clashed heads with Davinson Sanchez causing bleeding on the Brazilian’s forehead. Liverpool fans will be hoping it’s not too significant as they are close to winning their second Premier League title, and will want their number one on the pitch when the moment comes.
Four goalkeepers called up to England Squad
Last week, Thomas Tuchel announced his first ever England squad. Tuchel made the decision to put four goalkeepers, Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, James Trafford, and Aaron Ramsdale into the 26-man squad. The decision to have four goalkeepers in the squad for qualifiers raised a few eyebrows as there were many quality outfield players who missed out on a spot.
Nonetheless, it was a landmark to include Burnley's Trafford in the squad, with the Clarets still a Championship side and the young goalkeeper in fine form. Should the new England boss look to the Championship for talent more often?
